Liturgy of the Hours: Art and Prayer for Kids

So awhile ago, 3 or 4 years, I came across a bunch of cheap canvases at a thrift store.  I bought them and let the kids put some of their art on a them.  We hung bunches of them on the bathroom wall in our old house, gave them to the grandparents for Christmas etc.

In our new house most of them went into one of my daughter's rooms, and have been there for the better half of a year.  But with some shuffling of bedrooms we have redecorated a bit.  As such the canvases are getting a second life:

We often use phrases from the catholic prayer style Liturgy of the Hours  (LOTH).  Sean and I each have some experience with LOTH so we appreciate some of the beautiful lines pulled from the psalms.  In fact, at our family prayer right before sleep we often use the phrase from night prayer, "May God grant me a restful night, and a peaceful death."

I also happen to be reading the Rule of St. Benedict lately and was reminded of some of the rich one liners that I had forgotten about.

So voila.  These canvases painted by Miriam and Junia now adorn their walls.

We are starting to use these phrases at our night prayer as well.

Ultimately I hope that our kids have some scriptural reference points in their personal lives as they mature and move into adulthood.  It is sometimes nice to have a phrase, prayer, or poem to chew on.
